Glaucoma

Understanding and Protecting Your Vision

What is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma refers to a group of eye conditions that damage the optic nerve, which is critical for good vision. This damage is often caused by abnormally high pressure inside the eye (intraocular pressure). Over time, untreated glaucoma can lead to vision loss or blindness. Since glaucoma often develops without noticeable symptoms in its early stages, regular eye exams are essential to detect it early.

Types of Glaucoma

  • Open-Angle Glaucoma: The most common form, open-angle glaucoma develops slowly and painlessly. The drainage angle in the eye remains open, but fluid does not drain properly, causing increased eye pressure over time.

  • Angle-Closure Glaucoma: This form occurs when the drainage angle closes suddenly, causing a rapid rise in eye pressure. This is a medical emergency that can cause sudden vision loss if not treated immediately.

Symptoms of Glaucoma

In the early stages, glaucoma may present no symptoms. As the condition progresses, you may notice:

  • Loss of peripheral (side) vision

  • Blurred vision or halos around lights

  • Eye pain, redness, or discomfort (especially in angle-closure glaucoma)

  • Sudden vision loss (in acute cases of angle-closure glaucoma)

Causes and Risk Factors

  • Age: Risk increases significantly after age 40.

  • Family History: Glaucoma often runs in families.

  • Ethnicity: African-Americans, Hispanics, and Asians have a higher risk of developing certain types of glaucoma.

  • High Eye Pressure: Elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) is the primary risk factor for optic nerve damage.

  • Medical Conditions: Diabetes, hypertension, and certain other conditions can increase your risk.

  • Thin Corneas: People with thinner corneas may be at greater risk.
