Children Myopia Prevention

Here are some tips and strategies to help prevent the progression of myopia

What is Myopia?

Myopia is a condition where distant objects appear blurry while close objects can be seen clearly. It often develops in childhood and can progress as the eye grows.

Risk Factors

  • Genetics: A family history of myopia increases the likelihood of developing the condition.

  • Environmental Factors: Increased screen time and limited outdoor activities are linked to a higher risk

Prevention Strategies

1. Encourage Outdoor Activities

  • Spend Time Outside: Aim for at least 2 hours of outdoor play daily. Natural light is beneficial for eye health and may help slow myopia progression.

  • Engage in Physical Activities: Activities like sports can also provide the added benefit of reducing screen time.

2. Limit Screen Time

  • Follow the 20-20-20 Rule: Every 20 minutes of screen use, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds to reduce eye strain.

  • Set Daily Limits: Encourage breaks from screens and establish limits for recreational screen time.

3. Promote Good Reading Habits

  • Proper Lighting: Ensure adequate lighting while reading to reduce eye strain.

  • Maintain Distance: Hold books and screens at least 14-16 inches away from the eyes.

  • Avoid Reading in Motion: Encourage sitting down to read rather than doing so while in a moving vehicle.

4. Regular Eye Exams

  • Comprehensive Eye Exams: Schedule annual eye exams for children to monitor vision changes and detect myopia early.

  • Discuss Concerns: If there are any concerns about vision changes, consult an eye care professional.

5. Consider Myopia Control Options

  • Specialised Lenses: Talk to an eye care professional about myopia control lenses or orthokeratology (ortho-k) lenses that can help manage myopia progression.

  • Atropine Eye Drops: Low-dose atropine drops have been shown to slow the progression of myopia in children.

6. Educate and Raise Awareness

  • Awareness Programs: Educate children and parents about the importance of eye health and myopia prevention.

  • Promote Healthy Vision Practices: Share tips for maintaining good vision and eye care habits at home and in schools.
